Have you ever wondered what Macular Degeneration looks like? In Part 5 of our AMD series, lets look at some imaging technology available at Rule Eye Care Associates.

Stay tuned early next week as we are excited to share our new technology that is able to detect sub-clinical (can't see it with the naked eye) AMD before is gets to any of these vision threatening stages.

In part 4 of our Macular Degeneration (AMD) series, lets look at how AMD happens and common risk factors for the disease.

-AMD is an oxidative process. High-energy blue light passes through the inner retina and causes oxidation of the retinal pigment epithelial layer, leading to the formation of drusen.

-Free radicals are created in the retina due to cellular metabolism and as a result of the oxidation of photoreceptors.

-In addition to gender, family history, and eye color, Macular Pigment Optical Density (MPOD) has been linked to AMD.

-Numerous population-based studies have shown that lower levels of MPOD correspond to an increased risk of AMD. Until recently, we've been unable to accurately measure MPOD.

-Macular pigment is a potent blue light filter and contains antioxidants made up of three carotenoids: zeaxanthin, lutein, and mesozeaxanthin.

-These specific carotenoids minimize the effect of oxidative stress on the macula by absorbing blue light and neutralizing free radicals.

NOW FOR THE GREAT NEWS

-Studies have shown that oral supplementation of these carotenoids increase MPOD levels, which may in turn prevent the development or slow the progression of AMD.

In part 3 of our Macular Degeneration (AMD) series, we thought we would share some recent statistics and facts that we are trying to be proactive about here at Rule Eye Care Associates.

-Currently in the United States alone, an estimated 1.75 million patients have the disease, and this number will likely increase to almost 3 million by 2020.

-AMD is the leading cause of blindness for individuals older than 55 years of age, with one in four patients older than 70 years suffering from AMD

-The loss of sight due to AMD has been linked to cognitive decline, an increased number of falls, and higher incidences of depression, all often resulting in earlier death.

But, it isn't all bad news. In fact recent studies are very encouraging, and we now believe much of the damage caused by AMD is preventable.

Stay tuned this week as we tell you how AMD happens and some ways it can be prevented. Especially the exciting news that Rule Eye Care is the first private practice in Michigan to have the technology to diagnose AMD up to 5 years earlier than possible before and often before any vision loss has taken place!

There is an exciting rumor going around town that we are moving! And yes it's true. Earlier this year the building formerly known as the "R Club" was purchased by Rule Eye Care. It's conveniently located on Creyts, between 496 & St. Joe. Currently, it is in the process of being turned into a state of the art eye clinic by Wieland Davco Corp. This transition will help us to provide better care and service for our patients. We will take you along on as much of this journey as we can. But for now, here are some pictures of what the building looked like inside just 1 day before construction started. Major changes have already begun with the entire north side of the building having been removed. The current building is up for sale but we are still working out of it. We anticipate to be moved in to the new building by the end of the year. ... See MoreSee Less
